Remember, no matter how colourful your garden is during the summer, Green is a colour too and often can come into it's own during the winter months.

 Also, a number of different heathers can offer both colour throughout the year and ground cover, thus keeping the weeds under control as well as a variety of green, and other colours, from January to December.


There are plenty of sites on the net showing how to make good leafmould such as HDRA but you don't even need a container or enclosure if you don't have the room in your garden!

If you have the room, stick a few posts in an out of the way area, making a square, and wrap it round with wire netting. Then just fill with wet leaves (except fir, conifer, holly or other evergreen leaves) and leave for a couple of years.

If you don't want an enclosure then consider filling some black bin bags, again...
