David AllisonOur October 2015 Meeting was attended by some 30 members and guests who were treated to as always, an excellent talk by David Allison on a Beginners Guide to Fruit Growing (part 1). Not only did David show us examples of how to train apples and pear trees for the small garden, such as cordons and espalliers (ideal for along fences) but gave us information on why as well as how to grow fruit trees, even for the smallest of gardens, but he also brought samples for us to taste and take home.

For those who like a bargain, he also brought with him a number of a relatively new Strawberry variety, Maxim. These fruits are as sweet as regular sized strawberries but can grow as large as peaches and they were available for just £1 for a large plant, ready to fruit in 2016.

The 2016 membership cards were also available for the first time this month and the membership forms can be downloaded from our website,,  or renewal can be done at our next meeting which is on 5th of November and features Chris Cocks from Taylor Clematis who will be bringing plants for sale with him. Chris was due to come this month but the meeting clashed with a family holiday so has been rescheduled to next month. We look forward to seeing him, and you then.
