ILKLEY GARDENERS' ASSOCIATION March 5th 2015 Meeting

The meeting last Thursday was a very enjoyable meeting for the 35 or so who attended the talk in the Parish Church House Hall.  The brief AGM took place at the start of the meeting were the retiring Committee was re-elected with just one change, Dan Norton agreed to take on the role of Membership and Press Secretary thus easing the load on the Chairman. The President, Mr R Rowe, asked the membership if they were happy to re-elect the Committee and this was voted through unaminously.

After this, the meeting was handed over to the Guest Speaker, Alan Wilson from Otley who entertained us with some superb slides of his visits to The Isles of Scilly and various Cornish Gardens over the years. Alan has a real way with words and had us in stitches at times The gardens mentioned included the Eden Project, the Lost Gardens of Heligan, Trebar and then on to the Isles of Scilly. Probably best to fly rather than take the ferry unless the sea is calm, some of those waves were pretty high and the seas rough to say the least. The gardens on Tresco which in fact is a private Island and included in the cost of the boat trip is a landing fee!

The Association stores at Leeds Road Allotments are open each Sunday until June when we switch to monthly openings, just behind the Riverside Business Park. They  are open from 10 til 12 noon. We welcome new members so give it a go: only £10.00 per garden , no matter how many family members use it.

Our next meeting will be held on Thursday, 2nd of April at 7.45pm and our guest speaker is David Housen who will give us details on the butterflies in our area as well as how best to attract them to our gardens. We will also have the 2015 Association Mystery variety Fuchsia available for sale. These are to be grown on, in no bigger than a 6" pot for judging at our September Meeting where the best on the night will receive the Assocciation Fuchsia Trophy for the year.
